frequently asked questions

Are you available separately if our wedding doesn’t require both of you?  Certainly. Although we prefer to work as a team, we are available separately and realize that every wedding has different needs.

How are bookings made?  In order to confirm your date, we require a signed contract and a 50% retainer. We will not consider any other requests for your day once both items have been received. The balance is due 3 weeks prior to the wedding date. Our retainer is non-refundable. This helps protect us from last-minute cancelations and the losses incurred from not being able to make a re-booking.

How long after the wedding will the images be available?  Image galleries, downloads, and/or usb flash drives will be ready 4-6 weeks after your wedding, although occasionally sooner. Each image is individually processed to provide the highest quality, and this takes time.

Do you charge a travel fee to get to my wedding if its out of NYC?  If your wedding is located more than 90 miles outside of NYC, yes. We will provide you with a travel quote prior to booking.

Is sales tax required to be collected?  We are bound by the government to charges sales tax if your contract includes any tangible goods.

Do you have public liability insurance?  Yes, we do.

Do you offer photography for events other than weddings?  Yes, we are available for almost any occasion, be it a party, family portrait or baby photo session.

Do you make wedding albums?  Yes we do! All of our books are custom designed and produced for each client.

Can we order prints through you? Yes, our online galleries permit you, family, and/or friends to order custom prints. Since you will receive high resolution files of the photographs, you also may print your own images.

Can we see some full weddings you have photographed? Certainly. Please inquire about the kinds of weddings you would like to review and we will send you links.

Do you work with second shooters/assistants?  Depending upon the details and size of your wedding, we may suggest working individually, together, and/or with second photographers. We are happy to discuss the particular needs for your wedding.

Do we need to provide meals for you and your team?  If we are working more than 4 hours, we will require a meal. Our work requires a lot of energy and we need to have energy to work throughout your event.


Can you help us with our timeline so we allow the right amount of time for photos etc?  We are happy to help our couples with their wedding day timeline. It is a great idea to discuss the timeline with your photographer to make sure everyone is on the same page. This is especially important when planning for any family or bridal party photographs.

What is the best time for portraits?  Unless it is overcast or there is open shade large enough to fit the groupings, the best lighting for outdoor portraits is within the last few hours prior to sunset. High noon is typically the harshest time of the day for portraits. We are happy to discuss your event’s timeline to try to find the most flattering lighting.

Is it ok for a friend or relative who is also a photographer to take photos?  We love that guests are excited about our couples, but we are here to capture the moments and to free everyone to enjoy themselves. Oftentimes, well-meaning guests can ruin moments that we are documenting by inserting themselves, so we request that guests refrain from photographing or be well aware of our team.

Do you take formal family portraits?  Yes, but we have a philosophy of “fast and fun” for them. Even if you think you may not want them, some day these documents will be more appreciated than you can imagine.

Do you provide RAW or unedited files?  No. This is not something we endorse nor do any photographers we know.  RAW files are the equivalent of film negatives and have not been processed to achieve their full potential. We would never provide “unfinished” photos to our clients.

Can I share my photos with family and friends?  Certainly! We encourage you to share your photos with friends and family. We only ask that they refrain from cropping, editing or adding filters to the images and that they credit our studio (©Sampaio/Walz).

Are the photographs copyrighted?  We, like most photographers, maintain the rights to own, reproduce, and publish the photos for self promotion, website, advertising, and marketing content. This means we hold the copyright and can publish images primarily as a means to obtain new clients.  We do grant our clients an unlimited license to print and utilize the images for their own personal use (sharing with family and friends, personal posts and social media). Every once in a while, a client may request privacy and/or confidentiality. In such instances, we may be able to discuss an agreement.
